HIGH GROUND NOMINATION FORM (deadline July 16, 2017)
AWARD PRESENTATION: SEPTEMBER 21st, 2017 | ANNUAL C3 COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST
*Sculptural collaboration between Mark Palmen and Ray Ahlgren: The physical representation of this award was inspired by the concept of the seven mountain peaks of culture: family, religion, arts and entertainment, business, education, government and media described by Dr. Bill Bright and Loren Cunningham. Investigating geology led to considering columnar basalt formations, found in theNorthwest, that often form polygonal configurations that further evoke the number seven that became a design feature. The seven columns are arranged to suggest movement in climbing steps to achieve the representative high ground. The presentation piece is cast glass in collaboration with Ray Ahlgren and his Firearts Glass studio in Portland, Oregon. Ahlgren is a master craftsman and fabricator in glass, working in the medium for 40 years.
Mark Palmen is an artist working and living in Portland, Oregon. He received his BFA in Fine Art from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art.
